- The American education system is divided into three stages: Kindergarten/Elementary (K-grade 5, ages 5-10), Middle School or Junior High School (grades 6-8, ages 11-14) and High School (grades 9-12, ages 15-18). There is occasionally some variation to this in some areas, for example, grade 6 being joined to elementary and Junior High consisting of grade 7&8 only.
- Pre-school or pre-kindergarten is not compulsory in the US, although it is recommended if possible.
